October 2024. Twenty players, one team. Johan was one of the twenty.
This month we opened season three with eighty two players and six teams in the Danish league. Johan isn't in any of them. He's off to Martins Ferry High School in Ohio to play for the Purple Riders.
The move
Talata → Martins Ferry High School
- Founding group of twenty, 2024
- Academy U15 and U17
- Purple Riders, Ohio
- Leaves at 15
Why Ohio
If you're fifteen and Danish and you want to know how good you could actually get, American high school is the shortest road there is. It's how nearly every NCAA player gets there. Real season, real competition, and four years in a building where basketball actually matters.
Does it work every time? No. Plenty of kids go and come back. But scouts don't come to Copenhagen. That's just how it is if you're Danish.
What Johan did here
Johan came up through the Academy. U15, U17, and most weeks he trained with a group older than him.
He was never the loudest kid in the gym. He just showed up. Four days a week, two years straight, at a club that was two years old.
Nobody discovered him. There was no big moment. He was in the first twenty, he stayed, and two years later he's going to America.
Second one out
Johan is the second Talata player to go to North America. Malthe Mikkelsen went to Orangeville Prep in Ontario for 2025/26.
Two kids, out of a four year old club in Østerbro. That doesn't make us a factory. It does mean two kids got there, and both of them started on an ordinary Tuesday in this gym.
Go well, Johan. Gym is here when you want it.
