First session free · Home court: Svanemøllehallen, Østerbro
Our coaches come to the school, collect the children and run the session. Parents arrange nothing at all.
Plenty of children would love basketball and never get near it. The club is across town and training starts before a parent can get off work. So the sport just stays out of reach.
So we go the other way. We come to the school. Our coaches collect the children from the school door, run the session, and bring them back. There is nothing for a parent to organise and nothing for the school to staff.
The children get exactly the same coaching our club players get, from people who have played the game at a serious level. We are not sending someone to keep them busy for an hour.
Pickup from school, session, return to school. The school does not need to staff it.
The same coaches and the same method we use with our own club teams.
Children who catch the bug can carry straight on into our club teams and camps.
When we started running sessions at Strandvejsskolen in Østerbro, the program filled to forty children with five more waiting. Over the same spring our under-13 group went from a handful of players to more than thirty. That is what happens when the barrier to trying is removed.
Strandvejsskolen is the home of our Mini and Junior programs. Training runs in the school gym at Sionsgade 1, so the children never leave the building they already know.
We also run sessions with the school's SFO, and our coaches collect the children directly from SFO before training. It is the arrangement that proved the model works.
ISH High School trains Thursday evenings at Svanemøllehallen alongside our own U17 and U19 squads. English on the floor, professional coaches, and the option to add more training days for anyone who wants them.
Our ISH Primary School programme is being re-planned for 26/27 and we will publish the new day and venue once it is locked. Email coach@talatabasketball.dk to be told first.
Before Talata was a club in Copenhagen it was a basketball programme inside a school in Lithuania. Deng was head of the academy at The British School of Vilnius, and built the programme there from nothing over five years.
It started with the youngest children and grew upward year by year, eventually running all the way to the mid-teens. Training lessons, team practices, exhibitions, league fixtures and competitions, with the school's own students playing against other schools. The signed agreements run through to 2024.
The school has since moved to a new campus and the programme is running well without us. We are not delivering sessions there today. The relationship is a good one and the door is open, so if a school elsewhere wants a basketball programme built rather than just booked, this is the closest thing we have to a blueprint.
Our school trainings are run in collaboration with DGI, whose support is what lets us put qualified coaches into schools rather than asking the schools to fund it themselves.
We are building more school partnerships for the coming year. If you want basketball at your school, write to us and we will come and talk about it.
